1896 Krag Carbines in the Philippines

I purchased a neat original photograph on ebay that I would like to share.  Beautifully written on the back in pencil:  "Members of the 5th District Scouts who have been with me one year.  Taken at Angeles, P.I., Feb. 6, 1901.  Scouts organized Feb. 6, 1900.  Geo. Raymond seated in center of first row".  The Krags are clearly 1896 Carbines.  The few hat badges appear to be crossed-rifles (Infantry).  Angeles would later be the site of Clark AFB.  The only thing uniform about the men is the Krag Carbines and gauntlets.  I have to do a bit of research to learn more about this unit.

When I was a little boy, a retired infantry officer lived next door.  He sang army songs all the time.  I learned most of them.  There is one with a chorus that has the line

"For beneath the starry flag,
I'll civilize him with my Krag".
