Plain Old Dave:  Thanks for your info. about Camp Poland.  The 31st Michigan Vol. Inf. were moved from Camp Thomas (Chickamauga, TN) due to widespread sickness.  They were at Camp Poland from mid August 1898 to early January 1899.  They found themselves the last regiment at Camp Poland on a snowy New Year's Day 1899.  Three companies of the Detroit Light Guard were part of the 31st.  The Regiment had a lot of College Boys & Athletes.  They played and won baseball games against the 4th Tenn. and 6th Ohio Regiments.  They were preparing for a Football Game against the University of Tennessee, but it never happened.  The 31st departed to Savannah, Ga. in early January and performed policing action in Cuba from Feb. to April 1899.
