Krag Rifle sight

I am curious to know or wanting to figure out how the Krag Rifle sight works.  I believe mine is an 1896 Type 2 sight.  I am wanting to know about the number designations as well as the numbers and dash marks on the sides.  Is there an "operators" manual or guideline to it of how it works.  Sorry, I am new to guns so this is unfamiliar to me.

(photos of 1896 sight markings):  With the ladder down, ramp increments on right side go from 275 yards to 650 yards, in 25 yard increments.  The long lines signify 300, 400, 500, and 600 yards, corresponding to the numbered lines on the left side.  Photo shows sight set for 600 yards.

The 1896 Krag sight, with the ladder up, is sighted for ranges from 700 yards to 1,800 yards.  Sight in photo is set for 700 yards.

Wonderful, thank you so much for the explanation!!  I doubt I will be going beyond 200 yds but is nice to know how it works!  I will be going to a range probably on Tuesday of next week and doing 50 and 100 yards.

RHelm:  (Hint) - If your Krag shoots high at 50 & 100 yards, simply staple one bulls eye above another and aim at the lower target.  At this point, you want to shoot for group size and not be overly concerned with shots going to point of aim.  If you start correcting and use 'Kentucky windage' to try and get 10s, you will be all over the place and will not know your rifle's potential.  Use a consistent sight picture and shoot groups.  Elevation can be changed later by using an altered front sight blade.  Remember, the 1896 sight's lowest setting is just under 275 yards.  In this position, it was intended to be able to aim at a 'standing' enemy's belt buckle and score hits (head to toe) from point blank to 500 yds.

I went to a range and shot 30 rounds at 100 yds.  Not bad for first time but was sporadic and consistently high!  We just used a poster board (22"x28") with black marker target mark sort of in the middle and only 3 shots were below the horizontal.  Sure is hard to "aim" when I have to shoot below the target! Smiley   Any suggestions or clues as to how - I shot 2 or 3 milk jugs one day 2 Sunday's ago and now thinking how in the world did I hit them when I was high (but the yardage was much shorter and maybe height was not as bad at that shorter range - i.e trajectory still going up some...).

At 100 yards, place an aiming target down low and the target for group, score, etc. above it.  Try a 15" vertical spacing for starters.  Take plenty of clean paper for target backing. It makes corrections easier.
