There is this mark on my 1896 carbine that I was wondering what it for.  I looked at several other Krags at some guns shows and I did not find another with this mark.

"Wes", I've got nothing.  That is a curious mark.  You may want to try posting your question on the 'Culver Pages' on their Krag Forum.

What is the date on that receiver?

Are there a whole LOT of stamps on the front of the receiver? Perhaps some extra operation was performed, or had to be re-done, and they simply ran out of room. That appears to be some sort of in-shop tally or sub-inspection mark - and such were not normally applied to such a visible surface.

I have not removed the wood but there are no other odd stamps on the receiver that I can see.  Thanks

OK, but what is the date on the receiver? The other stamps will on the front face of the magzine box (not cover) area.

Sorry I did not get back sooner.  The date on this rifle is 1896.  I removed the stock and found these markings where you said they would be.
