30-40 ammo @ Gun Shows

I have had my 1899 Carbine now for a couple of years and have been to a dozen gun shows during this time.  I have yet to find any 30-40 Krag ammo at any of them.  Has the 30-40 ammo supply dried up?  Or am I just unlucky?

Dried up?  A little.  Unlucky?  Never.  You have a Krag!

Check out Ammo Seek link.  Ammo is not cheap since the unfortunate events of the last eight years.

Thank you so much for your insight on the ammo guys.  I will be going out of town today and there is a Gander Mountain in the town I am going to.  I'll let you know what I find when I get back.

Cabelas usually has a few boxes of the Remington 180 gr Core Lokt ammo in stock.

Most of us reload for our Krags.  Reloading is easy for the Krag round, and brass is readily available from Midway, Graf & Sons, and sometimes Cheaper than Dirt.  You'll find plenty of people here that will be very helpful with load data and favorite loads and tips.

Thanks for the replies fellas.  I have been reloading since a friend taught me back in '73.  I did purchase a .314 NOE bullet mold in the last year and I guess I best get the lead hot!

Once you get into casting bullets for your Krag (or anything else), you get a whole new set of problems to worry about.  There are at least dozens of designs (maybe more). Some are newer and others have been around since Krags were new. You can then worry about which moulds to buy, which powders to use, bullet alloys, sources for lead, tin & antimony, bullet lubricants, sizing, M-dies, crimping, lead pots, casting & ventilation, accuracy and getting the lead smears out of your barrel after you made a mistake.

Chasing after bullet moulds will introduce you to another bunch of collectibles.  I recently paid $100 for a very nice, nearly new Ideal 308403.

And then there are the products of the custom mould makers, both old timers & modern.  Most of them are a lot easier to use (less hassle & better results) than Lyman.

High Cap'n here.
Another hack that I use is 303 British brass.  Case forming is snap.  the casing is a bit short.  But works great.

I have had great results with the 314299, COWW+10% tin and 4198.

I was given my grandfather's 30-40 Krag and I'm trying to find ammo.   I'm in California...anyone have any information on where I can find some copper .30-40 ammo?

Hi CFontes.  You can usually get Remington or Winchester ammo, loaded with 180 grain bullets.  That's usually a good starting point.  Unless you're referring to the copper jacketing on the bullets, I doubt you'll find any copper ammo.  The cases are always brass.  As for your location, is there a Cabelas or Brass Pro Shop within driving distance?  Otherwise, you could order from an online store like Midway, Graf and Sons, Cheaper Than Dirt...  etc.  Most of us reload because the price of Krag ammo is so high, so I'd advise you to save your brass.

Hope this helps.

About the only way one will come up with non-leaded Krag ammo is to handload Barnes bullets.
