Questions about Krag 30/40

Print Post
I was recently given an old (Abused or WELL used) Springfield Armory Model 1898 Rifle.

I thought they were all chambered for 30/40 Krag ammo but this one seems to have a larger barrell, a 30/40 wll go into the barrell including the neck and is STILL loose.

a 30 cal cleaning brush will fall all the way through it, but a .45 cal brush seems to clean it just right?? just wondered if they made some in some kind of .45?

New here and it wouldn't let me post photos on the first post will try later.

First, let me welcome you to the forum, and to the wonderful world of Krags!

Some Krags were converted for hunting and re-chambered for rounds that were larger than .30 caliber.  Possibly .35?  You may need to make a casting of the chamber to be certain of what round it would take.

"GeneSC' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

Just a hunch. Does your Krag still have 'Rifling'?

I wonder if some Civilian owner had it altered to take some .44 or .45 caliber shot-shell?

Springfield and the U.S. Army did not do this. You have quite the curiosity!

After I got all the 'Gunk out of the barrell and got it polished a little with a barrell brush, you can see the "rings" of rifling but they do not have any depth at all, very little if any grooves.
A 30/40 shell sill seat nicely, is a little loose but so is my other Krag. but on it the bullet itself will NOT go into the barrell (which is how it should be) On this one the bullet and the brass neck of the cartridge will go in and rattle around. Undecided

Springfield and the U.S. Army did not do this. You have quite the curiosity!

GeneSC - If you measure or slug the bore and provide more close-up detail pictures (sights, bolt-face, action), you will get better information.

I would, in the meantime, highly recommend Not Shooting this Krag.

In your photos, it appears there may be a 'groove' cut into the top of the 'receiver ring' (unless I'm seeing an illusion). I suspect this Krag was turned into some type of "Shot Gun".

If an 000 buckshot is too small, try a .40 to .45 caliber round ball.

The inside of the barrel has been ground/drilled out.pretty rough too! don't have a mic. right now but will try to measure it sometime today. the ball was a .44 cal. .454 i think.

Inside the magazine/ chamber area looks like it had some patchwork at some point. looks like bronze.

A groove has been cut in the receiver ring.

Think Shotgun. - It looks like barrel muzzle area was drilled for a shotgun bead and the receiver 'groove' looks 'shotgunish'. It is possibly .410 or .44-40 shotshell ????? Pure Bubba!

Yep, barrel and chamber have been ground out.
3" 410 shotshell fits nicely, still don't think I want to shoot it.
Thanks for your help. will post some pics of my other Krag. Smiley

Does the magazine feed .410 shotgun cartridges?  Bubba strikes again!

Another question occurred to me.  A Lee-Enfield can be converted to .45-70 without too much difficulty, and the cartridges feed from the magazine.  Can a Krag be converted to .45-70?

Frank DeHass mentioned that his son and another fellow made one feed 444 Marlin.  Here in Ohio the 375 Win and 38-55 are now deer legal, I might make up one of them.
