Hello, I was given a Krag by my father in law
and I have had it now for probably two years.
I have researched it a little but I still would like
to know all I can about it. I read that some of the
early serial Krags by Steyr went to South Africa for the
second Boer war?
This Krag is dated 1896 Steyr. It is all matching
and I have the original sling with it too. The serial
is 8835 so it is pretty early in production. The only
drawback is it had what I have heard is the duffle bag cut
to the front of the stock from a soldier bring back? I have attached the section
back to the rifle but not in any way to further damage it
as it is serial matching too. Any help would be greatly appreciated
and I will try to post pics either on the site or provide a link to them.
I am primarily a collector of AK-47 kits and rifles but I really love this Krag.

It is likely your model 1894 Steyr Krag, #8,835, was made for Norway.

In 1896 and 1897, Steyr produced 33,500 rifles for Norway:
Norwegian Army rifles, numbered from 1 to 20,000 and 30,001 to 39,000. Civilian Norwegian/Steyr Krags numbered from 3,001 to 7,500.

The South African Steyr Krags are very limited in number and something of a mystery: Some have three digit serial numbers and some are in the 5,000 range - IIRC.

It would be great if you could post some close detail pictures of your Steyr Krag showing any markings.
