1898 Rifle Identification

I just recently posted info on my recent acquisition of my 1892/96 Krag rifle. Everyone was so helpful it got me thinking to grab my old 98' rifle out of the safe and get some photos up of it and see if there might be something close to my serial number of 428662 in the records. I believe this rifle to be issued to the New Jersey National Gaurd based on the NJ on the top of butt plate. I will post some photos of the rifle as well to see if there's anything I didn't know about this rifle I could learn from the experts! Smiley This rifle has a clean 1901 stock cartouche and I'm assuming correct 1901 rear sight. Thanks for looking fellas.

Thank you psteinmayer!! This was my first Krag rifle and really the antithesis of my forth coming addiction/love affair! Wink What is the Roosevelt Match? It sounds fun! I love competitive shooting, as I've shot USPSA many times before, and history is a constant study of mine so the combo of the two together makes perfect sense!! Smiley

Jeremy - That is a pretty neat model 1898 Krag with the New Jersey N.G. marked Butt-Plate.

Nothing close to your serial number in Frank Mallory's tables in "The Krag Rifle Story", 2nd edition.

Krag #428662 would have been built around December, 1902. The 1901 'acceptance cartouche' would suggest the stock has been switched during a likely Armory 'recondition'.

The "LH" letters on the Stock are the initials of Luger Hosmer, Dick's younger brother. Here is a picture of him shooting your rifle at Sea Girt, N.J., in the early 1900s.

He most certainly is that! Super nice fellow and extremely knowledgable. A friend of mine who belongs to this site as well had mentioned him and that he was always extremely helpful to him when he was on here.

The Roosevelt match is part of the National Rifle Matches, held every year at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio. The Roosevelt match is new this year to commemorate Teddy Roosevelt, who was instrumental in the formation of the CMP and the National Matches.  The Nationals are to be held this year at the end of July to early August, with the Vintage, Springfield, and Garand matches held on the 29th and 30th of July.  The Roosevelt will be held on the 14th of August on the last day of the Nationals, and is for Krags and early 1903 Springfields only.  There are several of us (yours truly included) who shoot in the Nationals every year...  and I'll be at the Roosevelt with my 1898 too!  If you want more info, or want to join us, PM me and give me your email address, and I'll help you get started.  You are ALWAYS welcome to join me for a match!!!

Paul
