Howdy Candace... and welcome to the Forum!

Your dad's Krag is a US Springfield Model 1894 Krag Rifle that has been cut down and sporterized.  The banded front sight is from a model 1903 Springfield.  Redfield is the manufacturer of the rear sight, which is a model 70K (and appears to be missing the eye peep).  The stock is a cut down rifle stock that has had a piece grafted on at the rear to increase it's size.  It's missing the rear barrel band.  This is a very nice useful Krag that should be great for hunting and general plinking.  Nice sporter!

I would expect a rifle with a stock modified in that manner to have been used as a benchrest rifle.  Once upon a time, shooting old military rifles with iron sights, and, iirc, cast bullets was a popular competition sport.  Our club still does it 4 times a year.  Were there any loading tools or bullet moulds with it?

'Candace' - Your Dad's Krag was never a carbine. It was a U.S. model 1892 infantry rifle, made around January or February, 1895.

It was altered by someone, after sale to the public, for 'Sporting' purposes. The barrel was shortened from 30 inches, a 1903 Springfield front-sight was installed, a Redfield commercial peep-sight added, and the military stock greatly modified.

A neat 'Family Heirloom', enjoy it!
