Just got my Krag. Need help!

Hi all- I just inherited a Krag and I've started doing  my research, but I'm getting mixed signals on what this rifle really is.  I'd like to find out the year of the rifle, model type, if it's a cut down or original.   Below is some info on the rifle :

22" barrel
Bayonet lug
Oil door in end of stock
1894 ( does NOT have the word model before the date)
Serial number:9085
P (proof) mark behind trigger
T mark behind trigger
JSA 1897
No "C" on rear sight
The front sight post has a gold band around it thinking its been reattached
There is an opening (damage) below the serial number

Any thoughts on this rifle or what it's worth? Thanks!

'jukes' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

It appears that your Krag, #9085, is an amateur assemblage of parts of mixed vintages. (It is not an 'official model').

It has a model 1892 Krag rifle receiver that was likely made in late 1894.

The barrel, originally 30 inches long, has been shortened to 22 inches and the muzzle re-crowned. The front sight base has been crudely reattached by bronze brazing. (None of this alteration work was done by a U.S. Armory or Arsenal).

The stock is a model 1896 Krag stock. The stock was originally on a model 1896 Krag, that would have been built, inspected, and accepted in 1897. (J.S.A. 1897 - Joseph Sumner Adams - Acceptance Cartouche).

The small 'T' stamp in front of the 'script P' is a stocker or sub-inspector's mark.

The stock has been cut-down from its original 46 inch length. The 'square hole' at the stock tip is because the normally hidden 'stock lightening cut' has been exposed.

As you noted, there is some damage to the left receiver wall. (This hopefully is a superficial 'chip'. It may have been caused by ill directed efforts, to remove the magazine 'cut-off' lever, with a punch and hammer).

IMHO - It would be wise to have the nature of the damage examined by someone knowledgeable about Krags to insure strength has not been compromised by cracking of the receiver wall.

Your bolt and 'side-plate' appear to be from later Krag models.

The front (muzzle) barrel-band does not fit the barrel contour properly. This is  because it was moved rearward, 8 inches, due to the shortening of the stock. The way the band now improperly contacts the barrel might disturb accuracy.

Your Krag's value would be based on its utility and 'parts value'. (Value is probably $300 to $375 - IMHO).

p.s. Your sling appears to be a Model 1907 Sling for the model 1903 Springfield. Depending on condition and markings, such slings can have surprising value. (The sling has been oddly 'threaded' on your Krag's swivels).

Thank you so much for the information! No wonder why I was having a difficult time researching this gun.  I'm still a fan of this rifle.  I have  learned a lot about a rifle I've never heard of.  Thanks again!

It may be parts, but I think it is pretty neat.
