"As Issued" Question

As part of my collecting, I like to set up my rifles as they would have been when they were issued.

I already have the three rods and the oiler from Grandpa's Gun Parts, a 1903 bayonet, and a reproduction sling.

Would one of the 1897 tools be issued with the rifle?
Was the front sight cover a regular issue item?
Brass muzzle cover?
Mills Belt (what color?) or McKeever box?
Were there any other cleaning tools/brushes that were issued?

'AFJuvat' - There is some fun Krag stuff you might find at gun shows or on ebay. Personal taste, interest, and budget are major factors. It pays to be patient, informed, and a good scrounger.

The first thing I recommend is a good 'Krag Library'.

Books like Mallory's - "The Krag Rifle Story" and Brophy's - "The Krag Rifle" are expensive, but, enjoyable resources and picture lots of Krag related equipment.

Joe Poyer's book is inexpensive and shows a lot of items.

Reproduction Ordnance Manuals are inexpensive and make good resources and accessories.

The brass muzzle cover/front sight protector runs about $80, but, appears to have been widely used in the early 1900s.

The Krag 1897 tool (a.k.a. 1894 tool) seems pretty rare and can be expensive, $100-200. I suspect they were not widely distributed. (For Range/Field Use, I would recommend making an obvious 'replica' from a common, WW2, 1903 Springfield tool).

A nice Khaki Mills belt (original or reproduction) is a neat item to have.

Attached are some photos to give ideas on accessorizing your Krag:

Thanks for the reply.

I managed to pick up a brass muzzle/front sight cover and the 1897 tool - yes, they are rather pricey.  Smiley

Also picked up a reproduction Mills khaki 'Double Loop' belt from S & S.  it is a decent reproduction, but I was somewhat disappointed that the hooks used to secure the belt are too wide\loose to grip the belt properly.  It will serve until I can get my hands on a real one.

Just waiting for my travel schedule to lighten up a bit so I can actually take it to the range and shoot it.

Mike
