First off welcome and congrats on your wedding present!  Do you have pictures?  If not take some pictures of the left side of the receiver, sights front and rear, any stock markings that are on the left side (opposite the bolt handle) and an overall shot and i'm sure someone can ID what you have.

Your computer probably has some way to adjust picture size - you do not need high-end software like Photoshop. On a Mac, it is a program called "Preview". I wrote my book using it, and it works well.

Open MSPaint.  choose your measurement scale.  pixels or inches.  resize in equal percentages both the vertical and horizontal at the same time.  Such as 75-75 or 35-35.  You should Save As a different name either before or after the process.  I reccomend the name change before.

I was curious about those too. I will be having a gunsmith friend check it out. I was told that it may not be fireable. I'm trying to figure out if it's an actual rifle or the carbine

'Redneckchevy90' - Your Krag is made from a model 1898 infantry rifle that someone cut-down to make it handier for 'Hunting'.

The odd holes in the Stock and barrel were apparently done for possibly an improvised Scope mounting. The Safety Lever on the bolt has been shortened, which was likely done to clear a scope.

Those barrel holes look pretty scary and may have compromised the strength of the barrel wall.

With how the holes are positioned I'm thinking it was mounted at some point in time. Like I said I'll be having it checked out. If it is compromised like I think it is I'll just get a nice gun case for it and mount it

At the least they did not drill holes in the receiver.  Is it still chambered for .30-40?

Redneckchevy, welcome to the forum, and to the wonderful world of Krags!  You're among a great group of people here...

My feelings are that those holes, being where they are, would have severely weakened the chamber area of the barrel.  They actually look pretty deep (from what I can see)!  I would just clean it up and enjoy it as a "Look but don't touch" relic or heirloom.

There is another option, albeit a pricy one:  You could have the CMP install a new Criterion barrel.  A carbine barrel, with the 1903 front sight would return it to safe-to-shoot, and you'll wind up with a fun shooter, and useful hunting rifle!!!

Just my $0.02

'psteinmayers' suggestion is a good one, if your Gunsmith advises against firing your Krag.

Used cut-down Krag barrels, with a front sight attached, are often listed on ebay and sometimes sell for reasonable cost.

If you can find a competent Gunsmith, who can switch Krag barrels at reasonable cost, this may be a viable route to go.

Plug the stock holes and you can have a shootable and more attractive heirloom from your Wife's family. (The trick is to not put much money into such an endeavor, because such an altered Krag is not worth very much - maybe $200-250). But, the fun is great!

p.s. Welcome to the KCA Forum and congratulations on your recent marriage!
