I just picked up my very first Krag, but apparently I need to post a normal message first before posting pics.

Hi and thanks for allowing me to join the forum.  I have been collecting and shooting military arms for a long time and for some odd reason I have never owned a Krag.  I have always wanted one and yesterday the planets were in alignment for me.
I picked up a Model 1898 rifle and it appears to be all original condition.  It was covered in old grease and many layers of dried gunk & dust, so I did a minor cleaning on it last night but left plenty of crud in the cracks and crevises.
The bore cleaned up nice, it looks very good but not real shiny in the grooves...still it should be a great shooter.

I see a lot of people asking about serial numbers so I will ask the same, hopefully someone with the info can look mine up, it is 158847.

I hope these photo links work:

Tsk tsk tsk.  Another deluded fool who purchased a most dangerous firearm.  Oh yes.  Very dangerous.  It can only lead to your ruin.  First one krag.  Then another. And another.  Soon you will be an impoverished shell of a man.  I see by your name you are on the path to self destruction.

Here.  Let me save you.  Just send your rifle to me.  It'll be a sacrifice but who am I to not help my fellow man. Cheesy

errrr.  I mean.   Cry  *sniffle*

Welcome to the forum Brokegunner!  That is a good looking gun you have there.  I can't wait to read your range report.

The smarter guys will be along in a bit.

All the best from Djibouti

'Brokegunner' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. That is a pretty nice model 1898 Krag that you added to your collection.

Close, but, no cigar!: Krag #158847 is not listed in SRS data. It is 'bracketed' by 158831 and 158903, which were issued to the 35th U.S. Volunteer Infantry in 1899.

Your Krag  number, not being listed in this group, pretty much guarantees it did not go to the 35th USV. (Only a very small percentage of Krags are listed in SRS data. I've never had one, yet).

Your Krag was likely assembled at Springfield, around December 1898. The 1899 'acceptance cartouche' is a nice matchup.

Thanks for the welcome.  I believe you can view the pics by clicking on the red X icon that shows up on my screen.

I used photobucket for years (paid member) and now that they are holding everyone hostage I am trying to use Imgur but it sure doesn't seem to work as well.

Congrats on your purchase.  Nothing like a Krag.  As a competitive service rifle shooter there is nothing like shouldering a Krag.

I HIGHLY recommend PictureTrail!! Have used it for years, very simple to operate, no access issues, and dirt cheap - free even, for a small account (or at least it used to be).
