Hey Guys,

I recently just picked up my first Krag. I picked it up on whim thinking it was a cool rifle. I am looking to find some info on this particular gun if there is any. I know there is a lot of different information on these. From what I have gathered so far is that it is a constabulary carbine. What kind of throws me off is that I read that those were mainly 1898, and my receiver is 1896. Also after doing a quick cleaning I took apart the bolt and noticed that the firing pin was grinded off. If anyone knows of a place that I can get a replacement for that I would much appreciate it. I am looking forward to finding out more about this rifle and the history behind it. I will post some pics below.

'g88ghost' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. Thank you for posting photos of your model 1896 Krag, #107154.

Your Krag was built around June-July, 1898, as a model 1896 rifle with a 30 inch long barrel.

Your barrel has been 'cut-down' in length. The barrel 'crown' at the muzzle appears crudely done. Your front sight blade is a 'repro'. I suspect your front sight base has been reattached.

Your Krag has been unofficially modified by someone into a configuration vaguely similar to a "School Rifle" or "Philippine Constabulary Rifle". The combination of parts and workmanship show it not to be the work of Springfield Armory or other U.S. Arsenals.

Your front barrel-band has been very crudely fitted to your shortened stock forearm. The barrel-band does not fit the contour of the barrel.

The Bolt-Sleeve, with the fine ribs and with the extractor retained by a screw, is one of the model 1892 Krag version.

"Parts Krags", in the "school rifle" configuration, (back in the 1920's and 1930's) were assembled from surplus parts by companies like Bannerman & Sons and Stokes Kirk.

It may sound like I am trashing your Krag. That is not my intent. It is what it is.

It is not a rare collectible model, but, it can be a fun rifle to enjoy at the Rifle Range.

A Firing Pin can be found on ebay or from 'Grampa's gun parts' in the KCA Classifieds. A Firing Pin should cost around $25.

Thank you for the warm welcome, and the wealth of knowledge about my rifle. I do intend to shoot it and enjoy it. I will check out the sites you named for the firing pin. Thank you.

Firing pins show up often on ebay. Make sure it is for U.S. Krag.

(Danish and Norwegian Krag Firing Pins look similar, but, are different).

You might call Grandpa's Gun Parts. He doesn't seem to have any listed.

S&S Firearms has reproductions at $45.

I can help you, if you are unable to find one, when I get back from Florida.
