Tale of two Krags

Hello all, 1st time poster.
So growing we had Krag rifle serial # 25,884 been in family since at least early 50's.  Dad always just referred to it as the Springfield and that my Grandfather had one still covered in cosmoline (which was lost when he passed away in the 60's).  When I was a teenager by chance my Uncle, looking for another rifle pulled out a Krag carbine.  I recognized it right away as being similar to the rifle at home, but did not say anything.  In the 90's Dad gave me the Krag, and a 93 Spanish Mauser that had been in the family.  I did some research and figured out the Springfield was a 30-40 Krag, and relagated it to back of closet. Fast forward to 2011ish, and I'm up north visiting NJ and I stop in to see my Aunt and Uncle, before I leave I asked about the Krag.  My Uncle pulls it out of closet and gives me a little vague history that it was given to my Aunt,s father who gave it to my Uncle, and that he knew nothing about it.  I told him that I had the rifle variant, and that if he ever wanted to get rid of it to let me know.  Well he turned around and handed it to me, and said its yours take it now.  Now for the punch line, my Uncle passed away about a year later, and soon after my aunt took his shotgun and 22 to a gun buy back. So that is how I ended up with Krag carbine #478,464.  Unfortunately it is not in the known carbine serial #'s and sports a 1896 rifle sight.  The stock is not cut down and has a 1901 catouche on the wrist, the barrel is 22". Bore is bright and shiney and reads slightly less then one on ME guage.   I'm thinking because of the high serial number, it might be one of the DCM guns sold in the 20's, but that is only speculation with no paperwork.
I would consider the rifle in good condition, bore is bright with good lands except for first 8" which are rough, hope to get this one to range soon.  I've shot the carbine, but have hard time keeping it on paper at a hundred yards, because of old tired eyes.
Sorry for long post

Nice looking Krags. Is there a cartouche on the stocks by the wrist? Or any other markings?

Hi meterman,

Very nice rifle and carbine!!!

I'm kind of perplexed about the rifle which appears to be an enigma?

The rifle model, or lack of Model, is 1895...according to Farmer"s Notes an 1895 marked rifle would be a "serious case of non-linear production for the "1895" marking to be found - not impossible but improbable."

I am curious about the carbine... Is it a .22 cal or 30-40 Krag?

The carbine's serial number puts it around the time of production for gallery rifles.

Great story and thanks for sharing!

This might be an option regarding the rough initial bore: (You need to Login to view media files and links)
These require handloaded reduced velocity rounds.

You may want to try grouping at 25 yards for starters.  Just reduces time and a little more forgiving on stressed eyes.
Orange aiming area might help as well

How bad is the grouping?

Thanks for the Tubbs suggestion, while I currently don't reload, I have been collecting components and equipment so that is a future possibility.

Question the rifle should be safe to shoot in this condition?

I think the problem with the carbine is me, next time I go out shooting with my son in law, I'll bring it along and let him try it out.

Unable to advise on the general safety of either Krag.  That really requires a hands-on evaluation.  Many a local gunsmith.  Now, that said, I won't expect a rough bore, by itself, to be unsafe.

Did you experience keyhole shots?  If so, its very unlikely the Tubb Final Finish will resolve that condition.

I have not shot the rifle with questionable bore, so I have no idea how well it shoots.  Hope to get it to the range soon.

You mind if I add your rifle to the KCA serial number database?
