Hello to the forum: does anyone know why this sight has the no. 3 stamped on it?  I have not seen it on any of the sights in the two krag rifle books I have.
     Thanks, kc

That is a good question and I don't see an answer in my references.

I looked at three, model 1901 rifle-sights, that I have in easy reach. They were marked #4, #7, and #8, in that same spot.

I believe it is normal for model 1901 sights to be 'stamped' with a single digit.

My hunch is that it is an 'Inspection Stamp', verifying proper sight assembly and function.

The Model 1901 Sight was quite elaborate and a whole Hill Shop building was built for its production at Springfield Armory.

Thanks. Your answer makes more sense than my idea. I thought they might be numbered to match up with different front sights.  I have another 1901 sight with no stamp in that area.
