Help with evaluation please
Aug 28th, 2019 at 3:14pm
Print Post
Hello to the forum: I am going to sell some krag parts that I no longer need. I would like to represent them honestly. I am sure most of them are original. I am not sure about these two handguards. I think the lighter colored one is a reproduction. Not sure on the darker smoother one. Any help would be appreciated.
     Thanks in advance, kc

Those M1896 carbine hand guards are so fragile, I have repaired the front wood ring on a couple myself through fabrication. I wouldn't care if yours were original or not! I'd buy them and use them!

Good luck. Nice pieces. How much do you want for each?

Number one looks unusually rough on the interior and the front lip looks altered, patched, and glued. (probably a 'repro' rifle hand-guard 'converted' to carbine).

Number two looks better to me and appears to have a repaired crack.

I'm suspicious of both hand-guards. The bevel in the wood, behind the sight opening, IMHO - appears too abrupt. I think it should slope more gradually, almost back to the rivets.

It is sometimes the 'metal' that may give the best clue: rivet heads and shape of 'clip' ends. Your photos don't show this well.

Your hand-guards are desirable to someone restoring a model 1896 or 1898 carbine.

These Attachments may assist: first two are of a crude reproduction, last three are of original hand-guard for the 1896 rifle-sight.

FWIW - This photo, of an Italian walnut (1898/1902 rear-sight) hand-guard, shows the inside detail of rivets and clips very well.

You really need to see all the fine nuances, (like cutter marks and rivet-ends), to tell if some hand-guards are original or reproduction.

I also attached a photograph from the KCA website. Note the difference in the bevel on the hand-guard on the left.
Is that a reproduction?
(IDK - I am not knowledgeable in the fine points of 1896 carbines).

Hello: Thanks for your help. I guess the best thing to do is take a lot of photos and list the items as is as are. I do not know the value of these items. I am going to list them on flea bay at a low starting price and see what happens. I hope to get some of them up in the next few weeks. I need the money for a krag I hope to purchase. Thanks again for your help.

King carp - I could use the 1899 carbine stock and the bottom 1902 hand-guard. Please PM me, if you have a Buy Now price.

You could probably make a few KCA members happy with mutually beneficial deals.

Ebay and paypal seem to win the most with auctioned items.
