Nice looking rifle. Barrel-band is on backwards. ("U" should be on right-side).

What's the serial number?

You have posted your carbine's serial number and mixed in some carbine pictures with the rifle's.

Very confusing!

#294496 sorry about the confusion. I was trying to get them all posted.
Only the second picture has the carbine in it along with the rifle. The rest of them are pictures of the rifle.

'JeffL' - Your Krag rifle, #294496, was assembled around October to December, 1900.

Both your 'new' rifle and carbine (#288611) have Italian walnut stocks and hand-guards (quite pretty - IMHO).

Both arms are setup for the model 1902 sight.

Both arms also have the "headless cocking-piece". This development was an economy move that proved to be more expensive than the regular 'knobbed' cocking-piece.
The "headless cocking-piece" was disapproved in October, 1900.
This cocking-piece was used on both carbines and rifles. It was in the 'supply stream' at Springfield when your Krags were assembled.

I think, you have a couple of Krags, assembled in the same time period, with interesting and authentic features.

Would the 1901C sight work and be correct on it?
Do you think the wood has been varnished? Can it be cleaned off?

The opening in your hand-guard is for the m-1902 rear-sight.

The m-1901 rear-sight has a different opening in its hand-guards.

I would not mess with the wood finish. If you are inexperienced, you will make it ugly.

Try rubbing some Linseed Oil on the wood and see if some of it is absorbed.

Try some 'Pledge' furniture polish.
