175gr and 220gr projectiles (Read 1849 times)

	Got the cut down sporter all wrapped up, have some questions on the loadout. I've got two different projectiles to use, and a handful of powders. I've got: Hodgdon H4198, IMR4895 & IMR4350, Accurate 5744, Win W296 & W231, and Unique. I "believe" I want to use the IMR4350. The projectiles are the Hornady Interlock 220gr round nose and the Sierra (2275) 175gr MatchKing HPBT. I've seen mention of the IMR4350 and both projectiles, however the Lee manual and the Hodgdon site both do NOT list the IRM4350 for the 220gr. In online posts, 40gr of the IMR4350 is listed as the military load for the 220 (or at least very close). In the manuals, 40gr of the H4350 is listed as the start point for the 220gr. For the 175gr Sierra, I can use the 180gr projectile data and work from there. (Lee manual doesn't list a 175gr) Nosler lists a 175gr HPBT round in 30-40 and lists a starting at 42gr - 2190fps, 44 - 2330fps, & 46gr - 2460fps max load. I understand these are from a full barrel and my velocities will be lower. I would like some more input on the 220gr projectiles. Lastly, I see some of the pressure ratings on the 30-40 load break the 40k mark. I'm not sure what the "safe" level of our old war horses are.

Thanks Frank I have - and castboolits, thehighroad, the shooting times, etc - and it seems as though recommendations have changed over time. I don't know if the powders have or not, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, and get the most up to date information. Thank you. Oh, shoot, one specific question for you - I found a thread from the fall of 2019 where you discussed considering changing from IMR4350 to H4350. Did you ever make that switch? Did I miss that thread? EDIT: I see just one thread below where you did update. Thank you. Lastly, I saw a pretty comprehensive primer comparison, however it was just standard primers. Will continue digging on magnum vs standard LR primers.

	These are the two that I predominantly use and have good success. The 220 is supposedly close to the original military load: 175gr BTHP, 37gr H4895 and 220gr RN, 40gr H4350

	H4350 is a little slower burn and works better for me on the heavier 220gr weight bullet. I use the H4895 for my lighter bullets on the Krag. You could likely use the H4895 in other lighter loads as well. I use the same Sierra 175 BTHP but matched with IMR4895 for my 30-06 loads which closely matches the old LC Match ammo. Mostly preference, but that’s what I’ve found works for me.

	Thank you Mike, although I've got the IMR4350 on hand. I appreciate your help. I'm trying to build a couple loads for the 175gr tonight to try tomorrow.
