Hi Everyone!
Let's try this again.  The first time the picture was HUGE!

I just purchased an 1898 from a friend because I thought it looked unique.  I had no idea there was so much history!!
Can anyone shed some light on what I've got?

I really appreciate the help!

Larry

You have a 1898 Krag rifle and it would have had a 30" barrel as originally issued with a stock that went almost to the end of the barrel. If yours is shorter, it has probably been modified to use as a hunting rifle ( it seems that at least half of them were cut down ).

The stock goes almost to the end of the barrel....within about 3 inches of it anyway.

I've attached another pic.  Thanks for your help!

You have the full length rifle with either a Krag sight hood or one of the Springfield 1903's hard to tell in the picture as they were almost identical. Looks like a very nice late production rifle. Keep it as it is as its value will only go up if you keep it the way it is now.

I did find one issue with it.  Looks like the bolt was cracked in half on the business end.  Not sure what happened there...
I looked around and it seems the bolts are interchangeable between the 96, 98 and 99's.  Once I find the replacement...do I need to worry about head spacing or will the new bolt work without giving me any trouble?

Wow!! Someone really abused that rifle!! With a replacement bolt you should check the head space

Would I take it to a gunsmith for that?  I'm somewhat of a rookie when it comes to this kind of stuff.  Undecided

lwt47:  It looks to me like someone fired an improperly loaded cartridge or the wrong cartridge in your Krag.  I would suspect extremely high pressure caused the fracture of your bolt head and the loss of the locking lug.  Your rifle should be inspected by a competent gunsmith to rule out damage to the receiver and barrel from the incident that destroyed the bolt.  You might ask the friend, who you obtained the Krag from, if he knows the story of how it was damaged.  A replacement bolt should be checked for fit, fuction, and headspace.
