1901 carbine rear sight slide

I am new here and tried a search for an answer but had no luck. I have a 1899 carbine with the 1901 carbine sight. my problem is the sight has no slide on it. when I search the internet I can find everything but the slide. even Numerich has the other parts but no slide. Do any of you know why they can't be found or where they can be found?

I would try contacting Joe DeChristopher or one of the gentlemen selling parts in the KCA classifieds.

I have no leads on a model 1901 Krag carbine rear-sight slide. The rifle and carbine slides differ from each other. The carbine slide does not have to correct for drift as it moves up the leaf.

I have attached a photo contrasting the 1901 carbine and rifle sights.

'Hawkster': If you look under 'older threads' at the top of this Forum, there is a Joe DeChristopher thread. Ned Butts posted a working link, which will get you to the Joe DeChristopher page. You probably would need to phone him regarding such a part.

Thank You. I did find the link and sent him an email. By the way, if I can't locate a carbine slide, would a standard rifle slide work as long as I kept the ladder folded down?

'Hawkster':  I have never taken the 'Leaf Slide' apart on a Krag model 1901 rear sight. I never had to and it requires removing a small pin that retains the slide lock-screw. (Some Krag sub-assemblies you do not take apart unless you have to)!

That said, my answer to your question is 'kinda, sorta, I think'.

Keep in mind that, unattached Krag 1901 leaf slides are hard to find and expensive. You may be better off buying and using a complete 1901 rifle sight, while you hunt and search, over time, for a carbine slide.

However, I think a 1901 rifle 'Leaf Slide' will work on a 1901 carbine leaf, if you take the 'Leaf Slide' apart and omit using its 'Drift Slide' (The flat plate with the 'peep-hole'). I suppose a narrower .235" Drift Slide would be relatively easy to make.

The rifle 'Drift Slide' is .285 inches wide. The similar part on the carbine 'Leaf Slide' is only .235 inches wide.

Details attached from the Krag, 1917 U.S.ordnance manual.

Thank You for all of your help. I think I will find a 1901 rifle sight to use until I can locate the carbine slide.

The 1901 Rifle sights are out there, and shouldn't break the bank either.

Check out Joe DeChristopher's site: (You need to Login to view media files and links)
