Model 1896 - Need Information

SN 78298 – Model 1896 (Manufactured 1897?) Kraig Carbine.
I have had this rifle for about 50 years as it was given to me by my Uncle years ago.  I know nothing more than it appears to me to be all original.  However, I wanted to post this with your association as I would appreciate any expert information I can get concerning the old rifle as pictures can sometimes tell a story in themselves to the discerning eye.  I would also like to get advice on what the value range of this gun is if I were to sell it.  Any help is most appreciated.

We will need the serial number and more pictures showing the complete carbine to give you a good estimate of the value.

Sorry..............I didn't scroll over. The serial number is close to some carbines in SRS lists , so, I would think that it is a 1896 saddle ring carbine. It would appear to have rear sling swivel added because of the sling.

'JayHawker' - You appear to have a rather nice and correct U.S. Model 1896 Krag-Jorgensen cavalry carbine.

Its appearance would be improved by removing the second Rifle barrel-band (with the sling swivel) and the butt-swivel (which appears to be simply screwed to the stock). These parts were probably added by a 'Hunter' and are not correct on the carbine. The "No-Buckle" sling is worth about $40 and the pair of sling swivel, about $40.

IMHO - Your cavalry carbine is probably worth $1,250 to $1,800, depending on bore condition and correctness on close examination. (The model 1896 carbine rear-sight is worth $550 by itself)!

It looks like a nice desirable carbine, Enjoy.

Pretty sweet looking Carbine there!  I agree with Chuck... remove the rear swivel and rifle barrel band.  You'll probably have to fill in the holes for the rear swivel screws... but at least it wasn't crudely inletted like some have done.

Thank you both for taking a look and your information.  I was always curious about the sling with this rifle.  The front loop appears contemporary to the gun as the band fits the barrel and stock so well and metal patina matched gun.  Rear sling loop was not a good match.  It wood be easy fix to bring it back to original but I quit riding horses years ago so better leave sling for now:-) Thank you all again your help as it is most appreciated!

IMHO - Extra barrel-band, sling, and butt-swivel just clutter up foxy appearance of nice carbine.

(Don't mess with your carbine's nice patina - just unclutter).

Photo of a model 1896 carbine for reference:

Great picture and agree dropping the shoulder strap looks much better.  I might consider parting with my rifle but would need to get $2500 as it is in very good condition to excellent.  What do you think?

'JHawker' - You have a very desirable model 1896 carbine.

I'm 'old school' when it comes to Grading and putting a Value on firearms.

IMHO your Krag is in 'Good' condition, complete, with honest wear and a nice even patina.

There are some noticeable blemishes: 1.- A couple of wood-screw holes in the stock butt, where the rifle swivel is attached. 2.- It appears there are a couple of cracks or a patch in the small area of the stock in front of the bolt-handle.

I'm not trying to nitpick a nice honest Krag. Such things do effect value (and I already voiced my opinion on value).

I am definitely old so appreciate anyone old school or not.  I agree with you on the screw holes in butt stock of gun but think the cracks do not exist and is due to lighting.  I think for a Krag to be in any better condition, other than the two holes for strap loop, you might have to find it still in original shipping crate or in someone's collection such as your example.
