'John Hunter' - That's a nice looking model 1898 Krag rifle. For $270, you got a real Bargain!

Thanks for posting the detail pics of your Repro/Carbine's rear-sight. That is an 1898 sight-base (rifle). The "c" stamps are fake. The 1898 'three-notch' leafs were actually modified by Springfield to use on the 1902 base. Someone put this one back on an earlier 'scrapped' '98 base to make a 'quasi-carbine sight'. (I think S&S Firearms did some of these and sold them as Repro-Carbine sights). This will do in a pinch, if it is not passed off as real, but, the fake "c" is dishonest.

John: Not to be a hypocrite, but, you should switch your sight screws so the nice one is visible and the 'buggered-up' one is hidden by the leaf.

Thanks for all the info! I'd like to learn more about the krags. Can you recommend a good book. I have a couple of 1903s, m1 carbines and 3 garands with lots of books on them but nothing on krags. Also I bought a set of RCBS dies and I have 20 cases. Can you recommend a good load for a krag. I've read where I may have to use a .311 or .312 bullet but should I go round nose or a lighter target bullet. Thanks again for all the information.

John: With jacketed bullets in the Krag, I recommend starting with .308" diameter bullets. I usually stick with starting loads of IMR-3031 or IMR-4895 and 165gr. & 168 gr. spitzers. I seat the bullets out as far as the magazine will allow. I back-off my Resizing Die a turn or two and Neck-Size only.

Most of my 1898 Krags have bores that run .3085 to .3095". My Krags have chambers that accept Brass fired in their 'stable mates'. Cast bullet shooters tend to shoot bullets a couple thousandths over-size.

Joe Poyer's book, "The American Krag Rifle and Carbine", I find helpful and a good place to start (It costs about $20). Frank Mallory's, "The Krag Rifle Story", and Lt. Col. William Brophy's, "The Krag Rifle", are collectible classics, informative, out-of-print and expensive. There is no perfect book. All of these have their strengths and mistakes. (I have not seen Joe Farmer's self-published work. I am sure it has some interesting insights, however, he and I do not get along).

Thanks again for the info. I have some 168 and 178 A-Maxs I may load some this weekend. I'll give the carbine a good cleaning and see how it shoots.
