I've looked carefully and have not found any info on sighting notches on the 1896 rear sight.

Were they all the same? The sight on my 1896 has a fine notch, the sight on my upgraded 1892 has a larger notch.

I'm wondering if this was Springfield or not. It does not look like Bubba's work.

I can find nothing indicating a change in notching, so it was probably Bubba's cousin Billy Bob, who actually owned his own needle file, had a lighter touch, and was also tidy enough to swab a little cold blue on his handiwork.
