	does the " u " stamped on the rear barrel band go on the left or right side when properly installed?

	On U.S. service rifles, the "U" on the barrel-band should be on the 'right side' of the rifle (or musket). The open part of the "U" points toward the muzzle.

	The bands actually have a very slight internal taper, to match the barrel, and the "U' signifies "up" when the rifle is held vertical, with butt on the ground.
