Nothing too close in Mallory's, "KRS", 2nd edition, appendix.

Rifles #454960 and 455507 were apparently stolen from the Colorado National Guard, 11-20-1906, and 454960 was recovered.

Don't worry. Being close, but not mentioned, almost guarantees your Krag was not there.

Yelp, certainly good news!  That would've been a helluva note to have purchased a 100+ year-old stolen gun.  Thanks for looking.
It is scheduled to arrive today at the FFL.  Pics looked nice and got it at a fair price.

Picked up the 1898 Krag yesterday.  Looks very nice overall.  Bore is clean, shiny and very good rifling. Pics attached.  Cartouche looks like 1903. Need to install correct rear sight or this is correct sight on backwards and wrong handguard.
What to the characters stamped into buttstock heel represent: 2F6 (or may a 5)?

To my untrained eye the rear sight appears to be on backwards.
Nice looking rifle BTW congrats!

'kerz' - That is a very niece looking model 1898 Krag that you received today.

Your sight problem has two aspects. You have a model 1901 hand-guard and a model 1902 rear-sight.

The sight is on backwards because it is an incompatible matchup.

Krag hand-guards are sight specific. The sight openings in the wood are different for 1896, 1898/1902, and 1901 sights. You need a rifle version of the 1901 rear-sight. (The one sitting on a book in my picture).

It is easier and cheaper to get a 1901 sight than a 1902 hand-guard.

The marking on your stock is likely a 'rack number'.

My first Krag had the opposite set-up.

A 1901 sight installed backwards in a 1902 hand guard.  I replaced the sight as the hand guard finish matches the stock.

I will be installing the 1901 sight in my (hopefully) soon to be completed BoOF tribute rifle.

Replaced the 1902 with a 1901 rear sight.
