Going through my old rifles, and deep cleaning them all, and it's the  1896's turn.  This was handed down to me from my Grandfather to my Father and to me many years ago up.  I took it to the range many moons ago.  From what I can tell it appears to be an original 1896 carbine manufactures in 1897, your expertise and help would be appreciated.

'Intervention' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. It is very neat that you have a Krag that has been handed down through several generations of your family. Dang, those are some Big Pictures!

Your model 1896 Krag's action serial number, #69041, is in the midst of a bunch of model 1896 carbine numbers. However, your Krag is not in a U.S. carbine configuration.

It appears to be a collection of parts put together to make a useful rifle for 'Hunting'.

Your stock is a cut-down (shortened) model 1896 rifle stock with sling-swivels.

Your front sight is a 'banded' 1903 Springfield sight and not an issue Krag sight.

Your barrel is either a cut-down rifle barrel or a carbine barrel that had its original front sight removed.

Your rear-sight is a model 1902 Krag rifle sight. (It is the variation that used some 'recycled' model 1898 sight parts).

Your bolt-sleeve and extractor are from the model 1892 Krag.

This still makes your Krag a nice serviceable short rifle for hunting and shooting, with a good family history!

Thank you for all of that information!  Looks like it's going to be a fun pass along shooting rifle.
