Too Many Krags - What To Do?

In 1915 General Crozier was interviewed by an appropriations board. The Army at that time appeared to have no use for the Krag. The Army was even considering selling them to other countries with the stipulation that they couldn't be returned. That would have been a shame. They were concerned with anarchist obtaining them in our country and decided it wasn't a good idea.

As seen above, General Crozier was not in favor of dumping the 358,000 Krag rifles on the U.S. civilian population in 1915. He was in favor of selling them to another country. But what if it was Germany? The following article ran during the same year, 1915, where there was rumor of Germany trying to get these condemned Krags. What if they would have? Our hobby would have been severely hampered. Or am I just getting overly dramatic?

Kaiser Wilhelm was given the gift of a U.S. Springfield Armory made Krag, back in 1894. (I'd like to know what happened to that one? Hopefully it survives in an Arms Museum in Germany).

If Germany had obtained U.S. Krags in large numbers, I'm sure they would have shown up somewhere mischievous, like Ireland, to destabilize the United Kingdom.

Or worse, in Mexico, to keep the U.S. concerned, preoccupied, and Neutral, (in regards to Europe).

I read somewhere (can't find it readily) that Mexico wanted to buy our 1903 Springfields. Not sure what year it was, but they were offered to buy Krags from the U.S. and they refused. Of course, I'm sure they would have taken Krags from Germany for free if the opportunity arose.

IIRC - The U.S. justification for Declaring War on Germany in 1917 was the 'Zimmerman Note'.
This was a (detected) German Diplomatic effort to entice Mexico to perform some  border disturbances along the U.S. Border.

BTW - In 1916, Germany made efforts to sneak obsolete arms into Ireland. Some got through and were used in the 'Easter Uprising'.

WW1 Germany had some schemes afoot .... Lenin .... Russia!

Looks like I was duped by "fake news" from the New York Times 104 years later. Still might be a story in there somewhere.

Most of the older members have probably been to this website, but maybe some of the newer members have not:

Lots of abbreviated Krag historical information to include the Kaiser's American Krag.

That is an interesting entry regarding Ole Krag dying in Paris in 1916 from pneumonia. I did not know about his surviving the sinking of a torpedoed ship, but, the exposure to the cold, being a factor in his death.
