Sperm whale oil was used to lubricate clocks and watches in the past (now lubricated with synthetic oil).

Knute, thanks for posting the Annual Report reference on the Krag oiler, designed for carriage in the cartridge-belt or 'butt-trap'.

Of course the real 'pocket oiler', intended to be carried by Sergeants, is different from my earlier post.

It is 'pocket watch' size, displayed in the KCA Website photos, really carried cosmoline oil, and is very rare.

Sperm oil has not been imported or sold since the early 1970s.  Automobile automatic transmissions relied on it too, which explains the really bad automatic transmissions in the early - mid 1970s.

Jojoba oil is the next best thing to Sperm Oil.  Both of them are technically liquid waxes.
